Semi-Washed Process

About This Process

Semi-Washed, known locally as Giling Basah (wet-hulling), is Indonesia's signature processing method. Beans are pulped, briefly fermented, then hulled while still at 30–35% moisture — far earlier than other methods. This produces the characteristic heavy body, low acidity, and earthy-chocolate depth that defines Sumatran and Javanese coffees worldwide.
